- Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born Aug. 26, 1910, in Macedonia to a financially comfortable Albanian family. Her father died when she was 8, ending her familyÂ’s financial security

- She took her vows as a nun in 1931, choosing the name Teresa to honor Saints Therese of Lisieux and Teresa of Avila
- Sister Teresa taught history and geography in Calcutta at St. MaryÂ’s high school for 15 years before beginning her service to the poor
- She once traveled through a war zone to rescue 37 children from the front lines
- Mother Teresa was honored with 124 awards throughout her 69 years of service; most famously, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She refused the traditional Nobel honor banquet, instead requesting that the $192,000 budget be given to help the poor of India
- Mother Teresa of Calcutta was declared a saint on September 4, 2016
- As of 2012, there are 4,500 Missionaries of Charity worldwide
- Albania's international airport is named after her, the Aeroporti Nene Tereza
