St. Martin of Porres Feeding the Hungry
Artist Unknown
This image of the beloved Dominican St. Martin de Porres captures the essence of his ministry: humble service of all people God placed in his life. Abandoned by his father, a victim of racism, and attacked by illness and the Devil, St. Martin never turned from Jesus or the path of service to which he was called. Devout in prayer and care for the poor and sick, Martin had many visions of the Blessed Mother and the Saints which helped him in times of trial, and was able to tell how to best care for his patients. The broom, a symbol of St. Martin's humility, is seen on the left, while the black boy and white woman and girl show his Christ-like love for all the people of Peru, even though he was often insulted for his race. He is a true model and patron of social justice by his devoted and selfless obedience to Christ in the Eucharist and other people.
