In the image, St. Joseph is building furniture and Mary is spinning wool in the family home when the boy Jesus, perhaps 10-12 years old, presents them with a recent craft project of his own: a miniature cross. Mary looks upon the cross and folds her hands in gentle concern, perhaps recalling the prophecy of Simeon from the day of the child's presentation in the temple, that Jesus would be opposed by many, and that her own heart would be pierced by a sword. St. Joseph looks on with a fatherly expression of both admiration and stern sobriety.
