Prince Ladislaus of Opole, Vice Regent of Poland, brought the icon of Our Lady to Czestochowa in 1382, where it came under the guardianship of the Pauline Fathers in their monastery at Jasna Góra, "The Bright Hill." When the Hussites attacked the shrine on Easter Sunday 1430, the marauders struck the icon with a sword, leaving scars on Mary's cheek. Two centuries later the monastery was miraculously protected from the invading army of Sweden. King Jan Casimir proclaimed the Blessed Virgin Queen of Poland on April 1, 1656. In modern times, the Virgin of Czestochowa was the source of spiritual strength and courage for the Solidarity Movement in Poland and the papacy of Pope John Paul II. Our image comes as an archival-quality giclée canvas in a beautiful black and gold museum frame. Handcrafted in Steubenville, Ohio, this beloved image of Our Lady is sure to be treasured for generations to come.
