These alabaster bookends honor the holy martyr and loving servant of Jesus, Saint Philomena. Able to keep heavy books in line, they both organize and decorate your home. This pair of bookends makes the perfect personal gift for anyone with a devotion to this inspiring saint and model of purity.
St. Philomeia is held to be a martyr of the early church. The daughter of nobility who had converted to Christianity, she dedicated herself to God entirely. She refused marriage offers from Diocletian out of her vow of virginity, and because of this was martyred. She is a model of purity and endurance in the faith.
The bookends are made from stone-cast alabaster here in our shop in Steubenville, Ohio. Alabaster is a building and decorating material created from the mineral gypsum that has been used since the time of the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. It boasts an attractive smooth finish.
Each measures roughly 6" x 8", including the 4"x 6" inset image plaque, and is 3" deep at the base.
"O most pure Virgin, glorious Martyr, St. Philomena, receive my humble prayers and obtain for me that purity for which you sacrificed, that strength of soul to resist evil attacks, and that ardent love for Jesus Christ which frightful torments could not extinguish in you, that I may one day be crowned with you in heaven. Amen."
