This reproduction of the "Agnus Dei" by Francisco de Zurbarán shows a young merino ram in high textural detail with its legs bound. It is clearly awaiting the slaughter, and the subtle halo above it's head draws a direct allusion to Jesus, the Lamb of God. The subtlety of expression, carefully controlled lighting, and attentive rendering of each little detail make this an emotionally engaging and deeply moving piece. This is one of Zurbarán's best works.
Francisco Zurbarán was a Spanish baroque artist of the 17th century. He was famous for his religious works and use of chiaroscuro, earning him the nickname the "Spanish Caravaggio".
