This man was born in Belgium as Joseph, but at the young age of 19, his parents allowed him to enter religious life where he became Brother Damien. He was later sent to what is now the Hawaiian islands as a missionary. Despite the initial feelings of his superiors, Damien proved to be a good student and was allowed to become a priest. As a missionary, he experience the lewdness of the culture, along with the outbreak of leprosy. Feeling drawn to those who were outcasts, Damien volunteered to minister to the lepers who were segregated to the island of Molokai. The priest cared for the outcasts medically, physically, and spiritually, delighting in serving the poor entrusted to him. As a final suffering of love and mercy, Father Damien partook in and died of the disease of which his beloved people suffered. St. Damien is the patron of people with leprosy, HIV, and AIDs, outcasts, and the state of Hawaii.
