This reproduction of The Annunciation by Ossawa Tanner shows Mary, in her bedroom cautiously looking up at the Angel Gabriel, depicted as a pillar of fire. His presence casts her simple living space in a brilliant light.
The Artist, Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) was the first African-American artist to gain international acclaim. Despite his skill, he was often regarded with racism and suffered grievously because of it. He was a remarkably skilled artist known for his realistic style, and use of symbolism. However many of his works show an impressionistic influence. The use of the two contrary styles gave his works a powerful, yet convincing effect.
