Steubenville High School is a public high school in Steubenville, Ohio. The school is commonly known by the name of its mascot, Big Red. The Steubenville High School originally opened in 1854 but the current school was built in 1940 at a cost of nearly $1 million, causing it to be labeled as the "First Million Dollar High School" in Ohio. Notable alumni include U.S. Representative from Ohio, Douglas Applegate, University of Iowa football star, Calvin Jones, the famous entertainer, Dean Martin, and Moses and Weldy Walker, who went on to become the first African Americans to play Major League baseball. Big Red is the only public high school in the Steubenville City Schools District and has approximately 700 students currently enrolled.
