Gerard David was a Netherlandish painter who was the last great master of the Bruges school of art. Building on the tradition of renowned Flemish painters that had come before him such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, Gerard David was known for his brilliant use of color, light, and shadow.
