Madonna Della Seggiola was favored for its new approach to the facial expressions and clothing of the Virgin. For the first time this divine figure was shown with a peasant-style scarf on her head and seated at a modest carved chair. This feature successfully endeared the Virgin to the working class who dressed and lived similarly. St. John the Baptist as a child is shown at the right.
