This unframed print of The Mother of the World by Franz Ittenbach shows Mary crowned as queen of all creation, seated upon a resplendent, jeweled throne. She is holding up the child Jesus, who is holding a globe, representing his absolute power over all the earth. By depicting Christ the King as a child, and Mary as the queen and his mother, Ittenbach is also pointing to Mary's motherhood over all the earth.
The artist, Franz Ittenbach (1813-1879) was a German painter from the Nazarene tradition. The Nazarenes were a group of painters that were known for their piety, modesty of dress, and commitment to making sincere, and morally beneficial religious art.
